FAQ

Is Judo for me?

Determining whether Judo suits you depends on various factors such as your interests, physical abilities, and goals.

Judo is a martial art that emphasizes throws, grappling, and submissions and requires physical strength, agility, and endurance. If you want to learn a martial art that focuses on self-defence and physical fitness, Judo may be a good fit for you. It can also be a great way to build confidence and discipline.

However, if you have any physical limitations or medical conditions that may prevent you from participating in physical activity, Judo may not be your best choice. Additionally, Judo can be a contact sport and may not be suitable for everyone based on their personal preferences.

It’s essential to speak with a qualified Judo instructor to discuss your interests and goals and to determine whether Judo is a good fit for you. They can also provide more information on the physical demands and expectations of the sport.

How much does it cost?

At J.W Judo Academy, we offer trial classes or introductory packages for new students, which can be a great way to explore Judo and get a sense of the classes before committing to a long-term enrollment.

What do I need to bring?

  1. Judo uniform (gi): This is the traditional uniform worn during practice. It usually consists of a jacket, pants, and a belt.

  2. Water bottle: It’s important to stay hydrated during practice, so bring a water bottle.

  3. Flip flops or sandals: You will need to take off your shoes before entering the dojo, and it’s a good idea to have something to wear on your feet when you’re not wearing your Judo shoes.

  4. A positive attitude: Judo is a discipline that requires respect and a positive attitude towards yourself and others. Come ready to learn, grow, and enjoy the practice.

It’s always a good idea to check with your dojo beforehand to confirm any specific requirements they may have.

What happens after the free trial?

  1. Joining the dojo: If you enjoyed the free trials and want to continue practicing Judo, you can join the dojo by paying the membership fees and registering for classes.

  2. Taking more free trials: Some dojos may offer more free trials to help you decide whether you want to join. This can be helpful if you’re still unsure about whether Judo is the right fit for you.

  3. Trying another dojo: If you’re not satisfied with the dojo you tried, or if you want to explore other options, you can try another dojo. Judo dojos can vary in teaching styles, philosophies, and overall atmosphere, so it’s important to find a dojo that aligns with your preferences.

  4. Taking a break: If you’re not ready to commit to joining a dojo, you can take a break from Judo and come back later if you decide it’s something you want to pursue.

Regardless of the option you choose, it’s always a good idea to thank the instructors and fellow students for the opportunity to try Judo and for the lessons you learned during your free trials.

What makes you different?

  1. Teaching style: Each instructor has their teaching style, which can vary in intensity, focus, and approach. Some instructors may focus more on competition and sparring, while others may emphasize the technical aspects of Judo.

  2. Philosophy: Judo is more than just a sport; it is also a philosophy that emphasizes mutual respect, personal growth, and self-discipline. Different Judo clubs may have different interpretations and approaches to these principles.

  3. Facilities: A Judo club’s facilities can vary in size, cleanliness, and equipment. Some clubs may have state-of-the-art facilities, while others may have more modest accommodations.

  4. Culture: Judo clubs can have their own unique culture based on the group’s values, traditions, and social norms. The culture of a Judo club can affect the overall atmosphere of the club, as well as the relationships between the members.

  5. Community: A Judo club’s community can vary in size, diversity, and inclusivity. Some clubs may have a tight-knit community that feels like a family, while others may be more loosely connected.

Overall, what makes your Judo club different will depend on various factors, including the instructor, the students, the facilities, and the group’s culture. Finding a Judo club that aligns with your personal preferences and goals is important.

What people say?

My son first started attending J W Judo at school six years ago. He now trains three times a week with Jason and he loves it! It is great to see how he had developed his knowledge and skills of Judo over this time, as well as his confidence. It is a club with a lovely family atmosphere with everyone encouraged to give their best. Highly recommend J W Judo.

My daughter had an amazing Introductory lesson, and it was from that lesson we knew Sensei Jason and J.W Judo were the right fit. Jason and the club welcomed my daughter. She loves the intensity the class offers to better her judo techniques, and Jason is very supportive in the children’s judo journey, always striving to improve and make the children better all the time.
